Cool Tech You Need

Here is a collection of some of the cool tech that you need to take a look at. The list will be updated to keep it current.

All Metal 7.0 inch Touch Screen Ultra-Light Mini Laptop

Cool Tech You Need - 7 inch mini laptop

At $449.99 (at the time of writing) this little laptop is one to put into your tool  kit. The laptop comes with 12GB of RAM and a large 960GB SSD, providing plenty of memory and storage space. It comes with Windows 11 Pro which is nice, but it easily can be reformatted with a Linux distribution of your choice.  You can connect to various media via built-in WIFI, built-in Bluetooth, USB3.0, mini HDMI, headphone and microphone ports, and SD card port.  This means that you can carry it with you and connect to servers to analyze problems that they are having.

Protectli Vault Pro 4-port model

Cool Tech You Need - A Hardware Firewall to protect your home network

The Protectli has – 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD. 8GB eMMC module on board. The ports it has are: 4x Intel 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet NIC ports, 2x USB 3.0 Type A, 1x USB-C 3.2, 1x HDMI, 1x DP.  Note: there is no operating system installed so you can choose the one you like. In my series on Home Cybersecurity I suggest getting one of these and in an upcoming article I will walk you through how to set it up. The price on this hardware is currently at $409.00 .

Dlink DGS-1210-28 Switch

cool hardware you really need - D-link gigabit managed switch

This switch is designed for small and medium sized businesses and it brings a lot of features along with it. The DGS-1210 is a managed switch and that means it is “smart”. You can manage it through the command line or via a web interface and setting things up is fairly straight-forward. The price on the switch is very reasonable compared to all of the things it can do. It sells for

Synology DiskStation DS923+ NAS

Synology NAS - hardware you really need

Everyone needs a NAS in their home! Not only to backup all of the documents, pictures and things, but to use as a home server for all kind of things. The Synology DS923+ is not the smallest or the largest NAS around, but it really hits that “sweet spot” for home users — Not too big or small when combined with 10Tb drives (which you need to buy because this does not come with any drives).  This model has 4Gb of RAM which is good for most households. The price on this is only .

Seagate 12TB NAS Hard Drive

12 Tb NAS Drive - Get the right cool hardware

These hard drives are specially designed for network attached storage devices. The price for larger drives is starting to come down, this drive is only $199.99 for 12 Tb. If you are purchasing the Synology NAS that I recommended, you have 4 drive slots. You don’t have to fill all of them at once, but I suggest that you buy at least 2 drives to begin with.
