Essential Bookmarks for Privacy and Security
Essential Bookmarks for individual privacy and security. A curated list of the best sites to find what you want when it comes to your privacy. This list will be kept up to date. Sites come, go and change. These are some of the best sources for information that I have found. I hope that you visit them and use them for enhancing your own knowledge.
Privacy Organizations
- EPIC – Electronic Privacy Information Center is a public interest research center that protects privacy, freedom of expression, and democratic values in the information age.
- Privacy Rights Clearinghouse – Privacy Rights Clearinghouse is a nonprofit organization focused on increasing access to information, policy discussions and meaningful rights so that data privacy can be a reality for everyone.
- EFF – Electronic Freedom Foundation is the leading donor-funded nonprofit organization that champions for civil rights and liberties within the digital space.
- Privacy International (PI) – Privacy International aims to be an obstacle to powerful institutions that are trying to strip users of their digital freedom and autonomy.
Web Browsers & Plugins
- TOR Browser – The Tor Browser is one of the safest browsing experiences by prioritizing anonymity & freedom of information above all else.
- Firefox – Firefox is a great alternative to the Chrome series of browsers. It does require some tweaks to be more secure.
- Librewolf – LibreWolf tackles most Firefox hardening out-of-the-box & does a decent job of maintaining security updates, but does lag behind in some instances.
- UBlockOrigin – UBlockOrigin is one of the best Privacy and Security plug-ins out there. I highly recommend that you use it.
Password Managers
- Bitwarden – Bitwarden is an Open-Source online password manager that is audited and very secure. It gives you the ability to manage passwords and other information easily. It can be Self-Hosted locally on your LAN.
- KeePassXC – KeePassXC is a modern, secure, & customizable KeePass client available on all major desktop operating systems with active development.
- KeePassDX – KeePassDX is a KeePass client for Android available on F-Droid (Works well on GraphineOS). Do not use the version you get from the Google Play Store for higher threat models on UN-secure Android devices containing Google Services.
2FA
2FA should be done by hardware keys. Authenticator Apps are sometimes OK, but they are, for the most part not open source and audited. If some entity wants to send you a text or email to verify – try to find another company to do business with if they will not give you better choices.
- Yubikey – Yubikey is one of the most polished and trusted U2F solutions.
Encryption
- Veracrypt – Veracrypt offers users encrypted volumes, and on some operating systems full disk encryption. It is a great option for those needing security.
- LUKS – LUKS (Linux Unified Key System) is the standard for Linux hard disk encryption. By providing a standard on-disk-format, it does not only facilitate compatibility among distributions, but also provides secure management of multiple user passwords. It comes standard on many Linux distributions.
DNS
DNS is The Domain Name system. In short, you can think about it like an index of all of the sites in the world. Then, human readable form of the address is matched with the IP and you magically are sent to the right place. For privacy, you can use a DNS to route your traffic and filter the results.
- NextDNS – NextDNS offers a highly customizable DNS solution for the upmost control across your devices in a simple interface.
- Quad9 – Quad9 offers a private & secure DNS service.
